Protocols for during volcanic eruptions

Preparation
- Register phones to eMNS (The Marine Corps "Mass Notification System")
- People living near volcanoes are recommended to find out if they are at risk of danger of volcanic eruptions
- They should know excavation zones
- They should have an evacuation plan prepared
- They should have an emergency communication plan in case they are separated from their family
- Stay away from volcano sites that show sign of activity
- Have an emergency kit prepared that includes goggles and breathing masks
What to do during an eruption
Basics:
- Stay tuned to radio, TV and eMNS alerts for information and instructions
- Keep car engine off and avoid driving
- Stay inside (if possible)
If told not to evacuate:
- Continue to listen to radio & TV, as an evacuation could still be issued
- Close and lock all outdoor doors and windows
- Turn off all fans, heating and air-conditioning systems
- Gather emergency supplies
- Stay inside in a room with no widows above ground level
If told to evacuate:
- Leave Immediately
- Turn off gas, electricity and water if you have time to do so
- Take your emergency kit
- Follow designated evacuation routes
Protect Yourself:
- Seek Shelter immediately if your are outdoors
- Be aware of mudflows if you are near a a stream
- Stay away from areas downwind of the volcano
- Wear long sleeved clothes
- Wear goggles to protect your eyes
- Wear a mask or damp cloth to cover your face and minimise breathing in ash
What to do after an eruption:
- Stay tuned to radio, tv and eMNS for information and updates
- Stay away from affected areas until told otherwise
- Be careful entering damaged buildings
