Practise Questionnaire results
I asked family members a few questions relating to our device idea and what form it should take. Here are the results:
- When asked what the most useful object to have as an eruption alarm would be, they answered "mobile phone". It's always on hand and has access to multiple communication methods (wifi, phone signal, etc). We'd need to present the device in a way that it would be close to the appeal of a phone.
- Keychains and rings were popular picks for an alarm object. Keychains are very easy to carry everywhere. A ring might buzz while you are asleep, and if you're wearing it, that will wake you up.
- The overall opinion on the reliability of an eruption alarm is very confident.
- When asked what miscellaneous object could serve well as an alarm, the armband was made unpopular by its potential discomfort.
- Opinions on whether the alert measurements should be "low danger, medium danger, high danger" or "low danger, high danger" were mixed.
- The users were asked whether the device should alert them when a volcano is erupting or if it should alert them if they are inside a danger zone. Results told me that knowing if their location is safe or not was more appealing. One user stated that if they lived far away from a volcano (perhaps travelling closer to do shopping), then an alarm would cause unnecessary panic.
