AI being used in detecting Eruptions - Katie
AI is already being used to detect eruptions. Researchers at Pennsylvania State University have developed new deep-learning algorithms that have been trained on data coming from satellite observations. These algorithms have been able to filter out the noise coming from unneeded data points-- such unrelated weather events-- and have been able to accurately observe and predict changes in ground movement. These artificial intelligence algorithms can successfully pick-up on the kinds of changes that tiltmeters and built to observe, and are often so subtle that they cannot be picked up by the naked eye.
Our product is distinct from these experiments because
we are primarily using ground-based monitoring equipment to collect our data.
Plus, we are focused on being able to provide warnings to people by linking our
wearable directly to the algorithm and basing our warnings on proximity to the
eruption.
